What to see and do in Gironella

Gironella
Village
Gironella is a town in the Berguedà on the banks of the river Llobregat, crossed by the C-16 road between Barcelona and Berga. During the restoration of the old church of Santa Eulàlia, Iberian ceramic remains predating the 3rd century BC were found, and a salt route linking the Cardona salt mountain with the east of Catalonia used to pass through the district. On 11 March 1714, during the War of the Spanish Succession, the town was freed from the Bourbon army after the capture of the termenat castle of Gironella. In the mid-19th century, according to Madoz, it had 127 households and 454 souls, after having been burned during the First Carlist War. The textile industry, with the colonies of Viladomiu Vell and Nou, was its economic engine. It has 5083 inhabitants.
Castle of Gironella
Monument
The Castell de Gironella is a medieval fortress documented since 1253, built by the barons of la Portella and later inherited by the Pinós, the Agulló and the Sentmenat, in a strategic position above the Llobregat valley. Occupied by Bourbon troops during the War of the Spanish Succession and damaged in the First Carlist War, it today retains remains of battered walls and a square tower, incorporated into the old town next to the building known as la Presó. It has been declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection) since 1949.
Sant Roc Main Festival of Gironella
