Castle of l'Espunyola Monument · l'Espunyola, Berguedà, Barcelona The termenat castle of l'Espunyola, of medieval origin and Romanesque style, stands in the municipality of the same name, in the Berguedà, and gives its name to the village. It retains two towers and a chapel, today in ruins, dedicated to Saint Clement, dating from the 13th century; between the towers a manor house was built, already in the 16th-17th centuries. It is first mentioned in a document of the year 950, in which Countess Adelaide of Barcelona donates it to the monastery of Sant Joan de les Abadesses, and by the 12th century it is already in the hands of a family that took the surname Espunyola. The municipality's official coat of arms depicts the old castle beside two anchors, an attribute of Saint Clement, patron of the village.
