What to see and do in Casserres

Casserres
Village
Casserres is a town and municipality in the Berguedà comarca, in the province of Barcelona, situated on the banks of the Llobregat river, twelve kilometres south of Berga. Its castle, of which no visible remains survive today, was fortified by Wilfred the Hairy in 798 and played a decisive role in the resettlement and reconquest of the territory between the eighth and thirteenth centuries. The village grew up along a single street between the castle and the church, today Carrer Major, which preserves houses from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The parish church, dedicated to Santa María de los Ángeles, is a Baroque building with three naves from the late seventeenth century, with an altarpiece from 1704. It has 1,660 inhabitants.
Castle of Casserres
Monument
The castle of Casserres stood in the Berguedà, in the municipality of Casserres, on the left bank of the river Llobregat, about 12 kilometres south of Berga. It was a large fortress between the 8th and 13th centuries and played a decisive role in the resettlement and reconquest of the territory; in 1025 Guifré II of Cerdanya, Berga and Conflent presided over a trial at Casserres. It is believed to have stood where the present town hall was later built, and the village grew up along a long street linking the castle to the church of the Àngel Custodi. Today no remains of the building are left.
