What to see and do in Montmajor

Montmajor
Village
Montmajor is a municipality of the Berguedà, in Barcelona, made up of Correà, Gargallà, Montmajor, el Pujol de Planès, Sant Feliu de Lluelles and Sorba, with 473 inhabitants. Its castle, on a hill, is cited in documents since 1170; it was part of the viscounty of Berga and later that of Cardona. In 1183 the viscount-troubadour Guillem de Berguedà bequeathed it to his son, and in 1199 it passed into royal hands; it also belonged to the monastery of Santa María de Valldaura until it passed to the crown in 1309. Today only part of its tower remains standing. The parish church, from 1918 and dedicated to San Saturnino, preserves remains of the earlier temple, documented in 1050 and which formed part of the castle. At Pujol de Planès stands the Romanesque church of Sant Esteve, from the 11th century, and at Catllarí the also Romanesque Santa María de les Canals. Its economy rests on dry-land farming and pig and cattle farming.
Castle of Montmajor
Monument
The castle of Montmajor, also called the tower of the Moors, stands at the top of the hill of Can Sabata, above the village of Montmajor, in the south of the Berguedà, between the houses of Can Sabata de Dalt and Can Barri; it is declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), although it is in poor condition. It appears in documents of 1170 and was part of the viscounty of Berga, later passing to that of Cardona; it also belonged to the monastery of Santa Maria de Valldaura until it passed to the Crown in 1309. Within its precinct stood the old church of Sant Sadurní del Castell, documented in 1050, of which part of the tower is still preserved; the present parish church of Montmajor, built in 1918 and also dedicated to Saint Saturninus, was raised to replace it.
