What to see and do in Montclar

Montclar
Village
Montclar is a municipality in the province of Barcelona, in the Berguedà comarca, made up of the settlements of Montclar, el Casó and Torregassa, with the village atop a ridge, around a square where the parish church and the manor house known as the castle face each other. It has 132 inhabitants (INE 2025). The parish church of Sant Martí, Romanesque and from the 12th century, preserves two Baroque altarpieces and a neoclassical one; the district also has two other Romanesque churches. The place is documented since 1117; the termenal castle, of which no remains survive, was granted in 1240 by James I to Pere de Breda and passed to the crown in 1309 by cession of Sibil·la de Pallars; the present building, from the 17th century, is a Cultural Asset of National Interest.
Castle of Montclar
Monument
No visible remains survive of the termenat castle of Montclar, documented in 1309. It stood in the highest part of the village, in the Berguedà comarca, probably on the same site now occupied by the 17th-century house popularly known as El Castell, on the plaça del Poble. The place of Montclar is first mentioned in documents of 1117, and in 1240 King James I of Aragon granted it to Pere de Breda, who held it until it reverted to the Crown in 1309.
