Castle of Guardiola Monument · Guardiola de Berguedà, Berguedà, Barcelona The castle of Guardiola, declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), dominated from its hill the entrance to the upper basin of the Llobregat and the Saldes, at a strategic point between the former counties of Cerdanya and Berga. A watchtower may already have existed there in the 9th-10th centuries; the place is documented as «rocha de Guardiola» in the year 939. From the 10th century it depended on the monastery of Sant Llorenç prop Bagà, which Agnès de Guardiola gave up in 1281 as its castellan. In the 14th century it was the subject of disputes between King Alfonso IV, the monastery and the Pinós family; Peter IV solemnly incorporated it into the Crown in 1346. In 1364 it was sold to the University of Berga and, the following year, the monastery's share passed to the baron of Pinós.
