El Palau (Bagà Castle) Monument · Bagà, Berguedà, Barcelona Image of Bagà, not of the place itself. El Palau, also called Castell de Bagà, was built in the 13th century as the residence of the barons of Pinós and the administrative centre of their domains, at the heart of the medieval vila closa of Bagà (Berguedà). French troops burned it down during the Revolta dels Segadors, in 1640, and it suffered further damage in the War of the Spanish Succession; in the 18th century the baron of Ur rebuilt it. Declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), the Town Council acquired it in 1990 and it today houses the tourist office and the Centre Medieval i dels Càtars, with rooms that preserve mural paintings from the 17th to the 19th centuries.
