Church of Sant Martí d'Avià Monument · Avià, Berguedà, Barcelona The church of San Martín de Avià, protected as a Bien Cultural de Interés Local, is the parish church of the municipality, in the Berguedà. The original church was consecrated in January 907 by Bishop Nantigís of la Seu d'Urgell, after being built by Count Guifré el Pelós; his son Miró el Joven had it consecrated as the church of the then-emerging town of Avià, around which the village grew. Of the pre-Romanesque and Romanesque temple, barely a worn capital survives, kept in a private house. The present building, with a single nave and side chapels, dates from the 18th century, with a bell tower of polished ashlar and an attached rectory that served as a Carlist barracks before the conde de España was taken prisoner there in 1839.
