Santa Coloma de Cervelló
Village
Santa Coloma de Cervelló is a municipality in the Baix Llobregat district, in Barcelona, known for the Colònia Güell, with Gaudí's crypt. It extends along the right bank of the Llobregat, at the foot of the Montpedrós mountain, and reaches the foothills of the Garraf massif; it comprises the old core, the Colònia Güell itself, an industrial and residential complex founded in the early 20th century by Eusebi Güell, and several housing developments. The first document mentioning the place dates from the mid-10th century; in 1323 it was known as Santa Coloma de Montpedrós, a name that changed owing to its belonging to the barony of Cervelló. Next to the crypt stands the Torre Salbana, from the 10th and 11th centuries. It has 8,273 inhabitants (INE 2025).

Monument
The crypt of the Colònia Güell is the only part built of the church that Antoni Gaudí designed for this former industrial colony in Santa Coloma de Cervelló (Baix Llobregat), a Unesco World Heritage Site since 2005, and considered a forerunner of the Sagrada Família. The industrialist Eusebi Güell, whose father had acquired the estate in 1862 for a steam-powered corduroy and velvet factory, commissioned the project from Gaudí, in which Francesc Berenguer i Mestres and Joan Rubió i Bellver also collaborated; Gaudí personally took charge of the church, of which only the crypt was built before, after his death in 1918, his heirs abandoned the project. The colony, whose textile production began in 1891, had a hospital, a school and a theatre.

Historical milestone
In 1890 Eusebi Güell moved his textile industry from Sants to an estate in Santa Coloma and raised a workers' colony with dwellings, schools and a cooperative. The commission for the church to Gaudí left the crypt as the only part built.
