What to see and do in Sant Joan Despí

Sant Joan Despí
Village
Sant Joan Despí is a city in the Baix Llobregat, in the province of Barcelona, with 35,926 inhabitants (INE 2025), located 10 kilometres from the centre of Barcelona, on the left bank of the river Llobregat. Its history goes back to Roman times, when the place was called Vicomiciano, and over time it has borne several names, among them Sant Joan del Llobregat; during the Civil War it was renamed Pi de Llobregat, a change without effect since 1939. The current Catalan form was adopted in 1984. With fewer than a thousand inhabitants in 1900, the population has grown owing to its proximity to Barcelona, to which it is connected in ten minutes by Rodalies commuter rail. A city known for the Casa Negre and the Torre de la Creu, modernist works by Josep Maria Jujol.
Tower of la Creu
Monument
Modernist tower by Josep Maria Jujol, an emblematic work of Sant Joan Despí, also known as Torre dels Ous, Casa dels Ous or Torre Parellada, and originally called Torre Gibert. It was built between 1913 and 1916 by the architect Josep Maria Jujol i Gibert, the most prominent of Gaudí's collaborators, commissioned by his aunt Josefa Romeu i Grau de Gibert as a summer house. The building, a two-family house, is made up of five cylindrical bodies of different diameter and height, crowned by domes of various shapes and clad in ceramic mosaic, with the cross that gives it its name topping the whole. Surrounded by a garden with a wrought-iron fence, it was renovated in 1966 and between 2006 and 2008, when it became the seat of the Baix Llobregat delegation of the Association of Architects of Catalonia.
Can Negre
Monument
Can Negre is a masia (traditional farmhouse) in Sant Joan Despí (Barcelona), transformed between 1915 and 1930 by the modernist architect Josep Maria Jujol, today home to the Jujol-Can Negre Centre, a municipal museum space. The original building dates from the 17th century; in the early 20th century it belonged to the lawyer Pere Negre, who commissioned Jujol to turn the rural farmhouse into an aristocratic house integrated into the new urban layout. The house deteriorated until 1966, when it passed to the Town Council through a donation by the heirs of the Negre family, and was restored between 1984 and 1990. In 1997 it was declared a cultural asset of national interest. Its façade, with undulating lines of Baroque inspiration, combines sgraffito, trencadís, wood, iron and plaster, and inside the staircase with a helicoidal dome stands out.
