What to see and do in Cornellà de Llobregat

Cornellà de Llobregat
Village
Cornellà de Llobregat is a city in the Baix Llobregat comarca, in the province of Barcelona, located south-west of the capital, 12 km away, on the left bank of the river Llobregat. It is the most populous municipality in the comarca, with 92,237 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its name has a Roman origin, Cornelianus. The first written reference dates from the year 980, when a church and a defensive tower against the Saracens already existed on the spot where the medieval castle now stands, built in the 14th century and today converted into a cultural facility. The arrival of the Canal de la Infanta in 1819 and of the railway in 1854 spurred industrialisation after centuries of agricultural life dominated by the masos; for a century, textiles were the economic base of the municipality.
Castle of Cornellà
Monument
The castle of Cornellà, documented since 1204, is one of the emblematic buildings of Cornellà de Llobregat, today converted into a municipal and cultural facility. It stands in the Centro neighbourhood, atop a small hill overlooking the final stretch of the Llobregat river, in an area continuously settled from Roman times through the Middle Ages. The surviving structure dates from the late 13th or early 14th century, possibly linked to the Cornellà family, also called Castellvell; it has a square plan with a tower at each corner, built of natural stone and rammed earth. Since 2000, following its reconstruction, it houses the Municipal Historical Archive, and its courtyard hosts concerts and other public events.
