Crypt of the Colònia Güell Monument · Santa Coloma de Cervelló, Baix Llobregat, Barcelona The crypt of the Colònia Güell is the only part built of the church that Antoni Gaudí designed for this former industrial colony in Santa Coloma de Cervelló (Baix Llobregat), a Unesco World Heritage Site since 2005, and considered a forerunner of the Sagrada Família. The industrialist Eusebi Güell, whose father had acquired the estate in 1862 for a steam-powered corduroy and velvet factory, commissioned the project from Gaudí, in which Francesc Berenguer i Mestres and Joan Rubió i Bellver also collaborated; Gaudí personally took charge of the church, of which only the crypt was built before, after his death in 1918, his heirs abandoned the project. The colony, whose textile production began in 1891, had a hospital, a school and a theatre. Photo: Enfo (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Santa Coloma de Cervelló
