What to see and do in Sant Fruitós de Bages

Sant Fruitós de Bages
Village
Sant Fruitós de Bages is a municipality in the comarca of the Bages, in the province of Barcelona, located in the centre of the Bages plain, to the right of the river Llobregat and north-east of Manresa. Its historic centre preserves the medieval sagrera layout, with houses clustered around the church. It is home to the monastery of Sant Benet de Bages, founded around the year 960 by Count Sala and consecrated in 972, one of the great examples of Catalan Romanesque architecture, declared a Monumento Nacional (a former Spanish heritage protection category) in 1931. It also preserves the parish church of San Fructuoso, of Romanesque origin with Gothic alterations from the 17th century, and has an aerodrome devoted mainly to skydiving. It celebrates its winter festival on 21 January.
Monastery of Sant Benet de Bages
Monument
The monastery of Sant Benet de Bages, a former Benedictine abbey founded in the 10th century, stands in the municipality of Sant Fruitós de Bages (Bages), in a corner of the Vall dels Horts between the Montpeità, or puig de Sant Valentí, and the eroded slopes of the river Llobregat, near the meeting point of the old royal road linking Manresa with Vic; today it is reached mainly from the neighbouring municipality of Navarcles. Declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection), it is one of the most interesting monastic complexes in Catalonia, with elements ranging from the Romanesque of its founding period to Art Nouveau, by way of the Baroque, which makes it one of the jewels of Catalan Romanesque art, enriched with additions over the centuries.

Food and drink
A research centre in cooking and food, housed since November 2007 in the Món Sant Benet complex, in the municipality of Sant Fruitós de Bages, a cultural and tourism project by the Fundació Catalunya-La Pedrera built around the thousand-year-old monastery of Sant Benet de Bages. Directed by Ferran Adrià, the Fundació Alícia is a scientific and gastronomic research space unique in the world that can be visited, with a demonstration workshop called “El sentit dels sentits”. The complex also includes an organic vegetable garden on the banks of the Llobregat, in the monks' former orchard, with dozens of varieties of apple and pear trees, allowing visitors to learn about the different types of dry-farming and irrigated cultivation.
