What to see and do in Navarcles

Navarcles
Village
Navarcles is a town in the Bages, on the left bank of the river Llobregat, at the point where it receives the waters of the river Calders and the Navarcles stream, with the smallest municipal area in the comarca. Documented since the year 940, it preserves remains of a Roman villa from the 1st to 4th centuries found next to the chapel of Sant Bartomeu. The town centre, eleven kilometres from Manresa, is organised into the neighbourhoods of Poble Vell, Sant Bartomeu, Tres Pins i la Cura and la Bonavista, overlooked by the parish church of Santa Maria. One kilometre from the centre, already in Sant Fruitós de Bages, stands the Romanesque monastery of Sant Benet de Bages. It has 6276 inhabitants and, beside the Llobregat, the Parque del Lago, an artificial reservoir from 1996 devoted to leisure.
Church of Santa Maria de Navarcles
Monument
A Baroque church rebuilt between 1690 and 1760 over a Romanesque church documented since 1050, when the soldier Sunyer de Randulf bequeathed it in his will to his son Bernat; its bell tower was begun in 1690, the chapel of Sant Sebastià was added in 1774, and the outdoor stone staircase dates from 1842. Rectangular in plan with three naves, it measures 27.70 metres long by 16.5 metres wide and 11 metres high, and its austere façade displays a Baroque doorway with plant motifs beneath a broken pediment. The side naves contain eight chapels dated between 1663, the oldest, dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary, and 1775; the chapel of Sant Joan Baptista, from 1706, burned down during the Civil War and was rebuilt under the invocation of Our Lady of Montserrat.
