What to see and do in Artés

Artés
Village
Artés is a town in the north of the Bages comarca, in the province of Barcelona, whose name comes from the Latin term Artium, "fortified hill". Already in the 6th century there was a fortified church in the area, and the Roman inscriptions at the Plaça Vella confirm continuous settlement since then; the Artés valley is mentioned in a document of 889 by which King Odo of France granted privileges to the churches of Vic, on which the town depended as an episcopal lordship. It has 6225 inhabitants (INE 2025) and today combines industry with vineyards and wheat: it is the only municipality in the Bages with a designation of origin for wines and cavas, within the DO Pla de Bages. It retains Artés Castle and, in its municipal area, the fortified farmhouse of les Torres.
Castle of Artés
Monument
Documented since 889, when King Odo confirmed the bishops of Vic's dominion over the valley and the castle, and mentioned as a termed castle in 1078; the palace and a minor tower were built between 1195 and 1199. Today converted into a farmhouse, it hides much of its Romanesque and Gothic fabric beneath later constructions.
Les Torres Farmhouse
Monument
Les Torres, known as Masia les Torres, is an 11th-century Romanesque fortification built on the estates of the episcopal see of Vic, in the municipality of Artés (Bages). Rectangular in plan, with a circular tower at its north-eastern corner, it preserves walls 1.40 metres thick and nearly ten metres high, with double- and single-splayed windows. By 1553 it already appears documented as a farmhouse. It has been declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (the highest level of Catalan heritage protection) since 1988 and preserves the original building almost intact, despite later extensions.
Wines of the Pla de Bages DO
Food and drink
The Pla de Bages designation of origin protects the vineyards of 26 municipalities in the Bages and Moianès comarques, watered by the Cardener and Llobregat basins; the microclimate, sheltered by the Pre-Pyrenees and the Litoral mountain range, and the dry-stone terraces mark a landscape which the monks of the monastery of Sant Benet de Bages had already promoted since the 10th century. Artés, documented since the year 889 and with a fortified church predating the 6th century, is one of its centres and the only municipality in the Bages with a designation of origin for both wines and cavas. With a century-old cooperative, it produces reds from the sumoll variety and whites from picapoll, the comarca's native white grape.
White Picapoll
Food and drink
Native white variety of the Bages, of oval grain, thick skin and late ripening. Almost disappeared after phylloxera, it was recovered at the end of the twentieth century and gives fresh, aromatic wines that today identify the comarca.
