What to see and do in Sallent

Sallent
Village
Sallent is a town in the Bages, in the province of Barcelona, on the banks of the river Llobregat, which divides it in two, with 7030 inhabitants. The town sits on a former Iberian settlement, and as early as the year 1000 it was defended from its old castle, which belonged to the bishops of Vic between 1246 and 1812, a fact recalled by the mitre and keys on its coat of arms, next to the Gothic bridge over the Llobregat, the traditional symbol of the town. Its main resources have been mining and industry. Notable are Santa María de Cornet, from the 12th century, the church of Sant Esteve i Sant Sebastià and the Casa Museo Torres Amat. Sallent celebrates its carnival in February, with a summer edition every five years, the Enramades after Corpus Christi Thursday, and its main festival on the second Sunday of September.
El Cogulló
Curiosity
The Iberian settlement of El Cogulló occupies the top of a 474-metre hill in the municipality of Sallent (Bages), on the right bank of the Llobregat, and is the most important pre-Roman site known to date in the comarca. Its position, with a wide visual command over much of the territory, gave it strategic value and probably a leading role over other settlements in the area. The settlement, bounded by a rocky escarpment and its own wall, covers about 5,000 square metres, with streets and quadrangular-plan houses documented by excavations. Its occupation spans from the 6th century BC to the 1st century BC, in three building phases, reaching its greatest extent between the 3rd and 1st centuries BC. It has yielded imported Ionian, Attic and Campanian pottery.
The first mechanical loom of Catalonia
Historical milestone
In 1826 a mechanical loom was installed in Sallent that is held to be the first in Catalonia, a foretaste of the textile industrialisation that filled the banks of the Llobregat with factories and colonies. The municipality was linked to cotton from then on.
Antoni Maria Claret, missionary and archbishop
Historical milestone
Born in Sallent in 1807 into a family of weavers, he founded the Claretian Missionaries, was archbishop of Santiago de Cuba and confessor to Isabel II. He died in exile in France in 1870 and was canonised in 1950.
