What to see and do in Avinyó

Avinyó
Village
Avinyó is a municipality in the Barcelona Bages, with 2,322 inhabitants and at 353 metres above sea level, in the Gavarresa valley, which also comprises the settlements of Horta d'Avinyó, Santa Eugènia de Relat and La Vall d'Urbisol. It is already documented in 974, as Avingone, in a land grant to the Benedictine monastery of Sant Benet de Bages; it later passed into the hands of the Queralt and then the Cardona families, and was called Aviñó until the mid-19th century. Its parish church, dedicated to Saint John, Saint Coloma and Saint Mary, is documented from 1232 and was reformed several times; at Horta another church of Romanesque origin survives, and a 14th-century Gothic bridge crosses the Gavarresa stream. The economy combines dry-farmed cereals, pig farming, vineyards under the Pla de Bages designation, and textile industry.
Tower of els Soldats
Monument
A military optical telegraph tower on the turó de Solells de la Posa, in Avinyó, at 400 metres of altitude, originally called the tower of the serrat de l'Oliva. It has a square plan 5.5 metres on a side and 7.5 metres high, with three levels separated by string courses; the ground floor, resting on the rock, has twelve loopholes and the telegraph stood on the roof terrace. It replaced an earlier tower, now demolished, which linked the towers of Artés and Sant Feliu Sasserra; the records do not give an exact date, though it is placed around 1849 or 1851, and the Generalitat catalogues it with the date of 1854. To the west a single-storey fort of 55 m² for the garrison is attached. The network was dismantled in 1862 and the tower was restored between 2013 and 2014.
