What to see and do in Castellnou de Bages

Castellnou de Bages
Village
Castellnou de Bages is a small municipality in the Bages, situated between the rivers Llobregat and Cardener, north of Manresa, with the Costa de la Vila serving as a natural viewpoint over the Pla de Bages and Montserrat. Its population, today scattered among farmhouses and housing developments, numbers around 1,473 inhabitants. It grew up around the old Castellnou Castle and the parish church of Sant Andreu, in basilical Romanesque style from the 11th century and now restored; beside it stands the Castellnou tower, and elsewhere in the municipality other Romanesque churches and the depopulated hamlet of Putxot remain. In the old village, sold in 1966 to a Salesian school in Barcelona and converted into a summer-camp centre, is the Museu del Maquis, housing items belonging to Ramon Vila i Capdevila, "Caracremada", the last Catalan maquis fighter.
Tower of Castellnou de Bages
Monument
Romanesque tower from the early 11th century, raised after Almanzor's raid of 999, which destroyed the nearby Castell d'Or. Documented as property of the counts of Barcelona, it passed through the lords of Balsareny and through Guilla de Lluçà — married first to Count Berenguer Ramon I and later to the viscount of Barcelona Udalard II — before James I exchanged it in 1246 with the bishopric of Vic, which kept it attached to the baronies of Sallent and Artés. A large cylindrical ashlar tower, about 7 m in external diameter and 12 m high, with three interior levels that narrow progressively; it retains remains of a wall and a moat. A Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection) since 1949 (BCIN 657-MH).
El Putxot
Curiosity
Deserted village that lived from the vine until phylloxera caused it to be abandoned at the beginning of the 20th century.
