What to see and do in Navàs

Navàs
Village
Navàs is a municipality in the north of the Bages, on the border with the Berguedà, which until 1960 was called Castelladral, a name still preserved by the serra de Castelladral, its central mountain range. The town of Navàs, documented since the year 982 as l'alou Nabares, stands on an extensive plain to the right of the Llobregat, with a modern grid street layout; its growth in the 19th century, when it did not even appear in the 1857 gazetteer, led to the transfer of the municipal services there and to the change of name. The extensive municipal area, drained by the Llobregat and the Cardener, preserves the castles of Castelladral, Montbui and Pujós. With 6238 inhabitants, the textile industry was its main economic driver, now in decline.
Castle of Castelladral
Monument
The Castell de Castelladral, documented since 941 as a possession of the viscounts of Cerdanya, had the Castelladral family as feudal lords from 1094; the knight Pere de Vilalta bought it in 1365-1370 and in 1413 it passed to the Peguera family, who kept it until the abolition of feudal lordships. It stands on a barren pass next to the small settlement of Castelladral, the capital of the present-day municipality of Navàs until the 1920s; nearby is the tomb of Castelladral, or del lladre traïdor, in Romanesque style. Rebuilt as a large manor house in the 16th century, only a few courses of roughly worked stone remain today of the original castle, since it served as a quarry for the houses of the settlement.
