What to see and do in Castellfollit del Boix

Castellfollit del Boix
Village
Castellfollit del Boix is a small municipality in the southern Bages, situated between Igualada and Manresa, on the watershed between the basins of the rivers Llobregat and Noya. Its territory comprises three former termenat castles: Castellfollit, Grevalosa and Maians. At the Vilaclara site a late-Antiquity rural settlement from the 7th century was excavated, with wine or oil presses and cereal mills. On a hillock stand the remains of the castle, and beside it the Romanesque church of Sant Pere, from the 11th century, with the ornamentation typical of the early Romanesque. At Grevalosa the 12th-century Romanesque church of Santa Cecília is preserved, along with the ruins of the 10th-century pre-Romanesque church of Sant Miquel. It has 467 inhabitants (INE 2025).
Castle of Castellfollit
Monument
Former termenat castle of the term of Castellfollit del Boix, in the Bages, of which only ruins remain today. It dates from the 10th century and has given its name to the municipality: its image, a golden castle on a red field, appears on the heraldic coat of arms of Castellfollit del Boix, adopted in 2005, and on the municipal flag, adopted in 2008, where it is reproduced alongside the green of the box tree (boix), which also gives the town its name.
Castle of Grevalosa
Monument
Castle of Castellfollit del Boix (Bages) first documented in 990 and sold in 1063 by Bernat Otger de Castellet to Count Ramon Berenguer I. In 1319 its then lord, Ramon de Malta, ordered it to be sold to religious institutions, and it was acquired by the Almoina de la Seu de Barcelona; in 1394 John I bought the jurisdiction of the castle. Within its grounds the priory of Sant Pere del Mont was established, dependent on the monastery of la Portella. It has been declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection) since 1988 (BCIN 652-MH).
Castle of Maians
Monument
The castle of Maians, in the municipality of Castellfollit del Boix (Bages), is a border castle documented since the year 927, when it is mentioned in the chronicle of the consecration deed of the monastery of Sant Benet de Bages, of which it was a jurisdictional lordship. Its site is already cited in 924 as Guardiola de Sala, the stronghold built by the local magnate Sala, also the founder of that monastery. In its walls, now in ruins, courses of opus spicatum can be seen, along with three circular cisterns and the outlet of an old wine press, with corners of regular ashlar. Next to the remains of the castle are also those of the old Romanesque church of Sant Andreu de Maians. It is a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Catalonia's highest level of heritage protection, BCIN 653-MH).
