What to see and do in Aguilar de Segarra

Aguilar de Segarra
Village
Aguilar de Segarra is a municipality on the western edge of the Bages comarca, in the upper basin of the Rajadell stream, bordering the Anoia comarca, at 480 metres above sea level. It has 292 inhabitants. The remains of Aguilar Castle, dating from the 14th century and now almost entirely gone, stand on a 622-metre hill; the municipality also retains Castellar Castle, documented since the 10th century although the present building dates from the 17th. There are also farmhouses with churches and chapels of Romanesque or Gothic origin. The economy is based on dry-farmed crops and sheep and pig farming. Aguilar's main festival is held on the first weekend of September, and Castellar's on the first weekend of August.
Castle of Aguilar
Monument
Aguilar castle, already documented in 983, stands on the hill of the old cemetery of Aguilar de Segarra, in the south-east of the Bages, in a spot that served as an excellent lookout over the valley and that formed part of the defensive system used in the comarca against the Saracens in the 10th century. It was a lordship of the Cervera family during the 11th and 12th centuries, and well into the 14th the provost of the chapter of the Seu de Manresa bought its jurisdiction from King Peter III, keeping it until well into the 17th century. Of the fortress only a few fragments of finely worked ashlar wall remain, not far from the church of Sant Andreu, whose original building was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War; once the war ended the present-day church was built, opened in April 1949.
Castle of Castellar
Monument
Castellar castle, in the municipality of Aguilar de Segarra, was probably built in the 9th century in a strategic spot for military purposes, and has been documented since the year 983. It is a rectangular building raised on the rock which in the 17th century was converted into a farmhouse, inhabited until a few decades ago. It had a system of defence towers from which derive the names of the neighbouring farmsteads of les Coromines, Puigfarner and Seguer, and beside it, on the same side of the hill, stand the church and the rectory, with which it forms a group crowned by the bell tower. In 1707 Charles III granted the county of Castellar to Francesc d'Amat-Grevalosa, whose descendants were, from 1923, counts of Sant Miquel de Castellar.
