What to see and do in Òdena

Òdena
Village
Òdena is a municipality of l'Anoia, in the province of Barcelona, which surrounds Igualada and has 3,760 inhabitants (INE 2025). Documented since 957 as property of the Ódena family, its castle was torn down in 1463 by order of Igualada, following its stance in favour of the Castilian king in the war against Juan II; today only a polygonal tower and part of a wall of the abandoned old village remain, overlooked by the mirador de la Tossa. On the outskirts stand two Romanesque churches: San Bernabé, from the 12th century, and San Miguel, from the 11th, with an apse of Lombard arcading, restored in 1976. Near l'Espelt the remains of a 1st-century BC Roman villa were discovered in 1948, with mosaics and pottery. The main festival is celebrated in April and June.
Castle of Òdena
Monument
Òdena Castle rises on a gypsum hill that overlooks the basin of the same name, in the Barcelona municipality of Òdena (Anoia), surrounded by the present-day town. Documented from the year 957, it belonged to the Òdena family until 1287, when it passed to the viscounts of Cardona; it was later sold to the Crown and, in 1347, jurisdiction over the castle fell once again to the Cardona family, in whose lineage it remained until the end of the seigneuries in the 19th century. It is now municipally owned and preserves an albarrana tower, with an eleven-sided polygonal outer plan and circular inner section, 10.28 metres high with walls 244 centimetres thick, along with remains of walls and a pool for rainwater.
Sant Miquel d'Òdena
Monument
Sant Miquel d'Òdena is a Romanesque chapel located at the foot of the road from Igualada to Òdena, on a small hill. It has a single nave with a barrel vault about twelve metres long and an apse decorated with arcading and Lombard bands; the voussoir doorway opens in the south wall, sheltered from the cold north winds, and the apse faces east. The sandstone walls and roof, with stone slabs on the apse and Arabic tiles on the rest, date from between the 11th and 12th centuries. Already documented in 1074 as Sant Miquel d'Ullastre, it was a suffragan of Sant Pere d'Òdena in the 17th and 18th centuries, with its own cemetery. A storm destroyed its newly built bell-gable in 1935, and it suffered damage in the Civil War; it was restored between 1976 and 1977 to a design by Joan Bassegoda.
Aguilera Peak
Nature
Puig Aguilera is a mountain of 626 metres located between the municipalities of Castellolí and Òdena, in the comarca of Anoia. Its name comes from the Latin aquilaria, “place where eagles nest”, and from it the nearby mas Aguilera farmhouse takes its name, known as de la Costa since the 16th century and already documented in medieval times. On the highest part of the puig, a building used during the Civil War for anti-aircraft surveillance is preserved, together with several shelters from the same period, and a geodesic marker. The summit can be clearly seen from the A-2 motorway as it passes Castellolí, and it is included in the list of the 100 cims of the Federació d'Entitats Excursionistes de Catalunya.

Old Village of Òdena
Curiosity
