What to see and do in Rajadell

Rajadell
Village
Rajadell is a rural municipality in the south of the Bages, in Barcelona province, with flat terrain covered in oaks, pines and holm oaks, and 597 inhabitants (INE 2025). It also includes the settlements of Can Servitge, Las Casetas, La Estación and Monistrolet. Documented since 1025, and its castle since 1063, between the 12th and 16th centuries it belonged to the Rajadell family, and later to the Cruïlles and to the Aimeric and Pignatelli families, marquesses of Sant Vicenç and Argençola. From the 14th century it had an Augustinian monastery, moved from Sant Miquel de Maçana to Santa Llúcia de Rajadell. At the archaeological site of Sant Amanç de Viladés, Iberian remains, a Roman villa and an early medieval settlement have been found. It lives on dry farming and livestock, and today also on second homes.
Castle of Rajadell
Monument
Rajadell Castle stands on a hill and was, together with the church, the origin of the village of Rajadell, in the comarca of Bages. It is documented from 1063 under the name Castri Ridagel, and the Rajadell family, who already owned it in 1273 and held it from the 12th to the 16th century, took part in wars such as those of Provence, Navarre, Almería, Sardinia and Mallorca, and had under its protection the small monastery of canonesses of Santa Llúcia de Rajadell. In 1471, during the Catalan civil war against John II, the castle and the church suffered serious damage. It later passed to the Cruïlles, Aimeric and Pignatelli families, until the marchioness of Sant Vicenç i d'Argençola sold it in the late 19th century. It retains three sections, with an underground chamber and the old dungeon, later used as a wine cellar.
