Marganell
Village
Marganell is a municipality in the Bages comarca, in the province of Barcelona, situated at the foot of the mountain of Montserrat, within its natural park. Its former official name, Santa Cecília de Montserrat, comes from the abbey of the same name, the municipality's traditional centre, already mentioned in the year 867. With 309 inhabitants, it preserves the Romanesque chapel of the monastery of Santa Cecília, active until 1952, as well as the hermitages of Saint James, from the 12th century, and Saint Christopher, from the 13th. The parish church, dedicated to Saint Stephen since 1143, was destroyed in 1936 and rebuilt in 1945. Its economy combines cereal farming with the artisanal production of mató, a fresh Catalan cheese sold in Barcelona and at the Montserrat market. The main festival is held in September.
