What to see and do in Monistrol de Calders

Monistrol de Calders
Village
Monistrol de Calders is a rural municipality in the south of the Moianès, in the province of Barcelona, between the Pla de Bages, the sierra de Sant Llorenç del Munt and the Moianès plateau, with 764 inhabitants (INE 2025). It belonged to Calders until 1934, when it gained municipal autonomy. The Calders stream rises in its territory from the confluence of several streams. Erosion has shaped in the landscape the so-called codros, large rocks of singular shapes such as the Codro Barret or the Codro Bolet, and the territory also preserves the dolmen of Pla de Trullars, restored in 2005, with wide views over the surroundings. At the entrance to the village stands the church of Sant Feliu, with a Baroque bell tower and a Romanesque exterior apse, although the present layout dates from the 18th century.
Church of Monistrol de Calders
Monument
The parish church of Monistrol de Calders, in the Moianès (Barcelona), is dedicated to Sant Feliu. Its origins go back to the 11th century, when the churches of the territory are already documented: Sant Joan Baptista, Sant Feliu and Sant Pere de Mussarra. The building retains remains of Romanesque architecture, among them the chapel of Sant Pere de Mussarra, integrated into the church of Sant Feliu itself, located next to the chapel of Sant Joan in the Sagrera core.
Monistrol de Calders Main Festival
Activity
The Festa Major of Monistrol de Calders is celebrated on 1 August, the feast of Sant Feliu, patron of the village; since 2010 the Festa de Sant Antoni Abat has also been revived, between the end of January and the beginning of February.
Riverside forest of the Calders
Nature
The river or stream of Calders rises within the very municipal district of Monistrol de Calders, from the union of the Golarda and Sant Joan torrents, and crosses mountainous terrain, three-quarters covered by pine and holm-oak woods, before flowing into the Llobregat; the riverside woodland that accompanies it is today subject to felling that threatens the quality of the river ecosystem.
Mills of the Riera de Sant Joan
Curiosity
Old flour mills powered by water on the Riera de Sant Joan, such as the Molí d'en Sala and the Molí d'en Saladic, in Monistrol de Calders. The Molí d'en Sala, documented since 1192 as property of the Sala Abadal estate, was built in its present form in the late 18th century by the owners of La Sala de Sant Llogari; it ground grain using the stream's water by means of two ponds that allowed grinding to continue in one while the other filled, and it remained in operation, with interruptions, until one or two years after the Civil War. Today it is well preserved, converted into rural lodging, and is included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia.
Vineyard huts of the Moianès
Curiosity
Dry-stone structures dotting the landscape of the Moianès, testimony to the comarca's winemaking past. The municipality of Monistrol de Calders alone, despite not being very large, preserves more than 700 huts, almost half of them in good condition; the rest show varying degrees of deterioration, some destroyed during the era of the maquis. Since 2007 a signposted route has run past the most notable ones, restored by the town council with the support of the Consorci del Moianès, among huts with round or square plans and others built against terrace walls.
The secession of Monistrol de Calders
Historical milestone
After a first town council of its own between 1812 and 1835, the village again depended on Calders until the Generalitat approved its segregation on 5 July 1934. The new municipality began to function in December of that year.
The vineyards and wine of Monistrol de Calders
Food and drink
More than seven hundred dry stone huts spread through the district recall when the vine covered these slopes before phylloxera. Some plots have been replanted and again give wine for local consumption.
