What to see and do in Talamanca

Talamanca
Village
Talamanca is a small mountain municipality in the Bages, part of the Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac natural park, with barely 209 inhabitants and considerable tourist appeal for its medieval character and stone buildings. The present-day village grew up between Talamanca castle, documented since the year 967, and the church of Santa María, in Romanesque style from the late 12th century and enlarged to three naves in the 18th. The Plaza de la Cruz, at the highest point of the town, serves as a lookout, and beside a centuries-old tree stands the Fuente de Talamanca. It celebrates its main festival in honour of Santa María, patron saint of the municipality, on 15 August, with sardana dances and sporting competitions.
Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac Natural Park
Nature
The Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac natural park extends across the south of the Bages and also over the Moianès and the Vallès Occidental, between the peaks of la Mola (1,104 m) and Montcau (1,052 m), where the monastery of Sant Llorenç del Munt, which gives the massif its name, stands. Managed by the Barcelona Provincial Council, it was declared a natural park in 1987 and in 1998 was extended to its current 13,694 hectares; in August 2003 a fire that started in Sant Llorenç Savall devastated its north-eastern area. The territory comprises two massifs, that of Sant Llorenç del Munt and the Obac range, joined by the Estenalles pass, where there is an information centre. The subhumid Mediterranean climate favours forests of holm oaks, pines and oak woods.
Battle of Talamanca
Historical milestone
On 13 and 14 August 1714, the Catalan forces of the Marquis del Poal defeated the Bourbon troops of the Count of Montemar near Talamanca, as part of the Catalonia campaign, the final phase of the War of the Spanish Succession. It was the last victory of the Catalan Austracist army, which pursued the Bourbon troops -more than 3000 men, less than half of them cavalry- to the outskirts of Sabadell, with fighting at Sant Llorenç Savall and Castellar del Vallès. Chronicles of the time speak of about 650 casualties, dead and wounded; it is estimated that around a hundred men died, eighty Bourbon and twenty Austracist. The battlefield has been the subject of archaeological surveys and there is an intention to turn it into a museum site.
