El Pla del Penedès
Village
El Pla del Penedès is a municipality of 1,393 inhabitants in Alt Penedès, province of Barcelona, on the fertile Penedès plain, drained by the riera de Lavernó, at 216 metres above sea level. It is recorded in documents since 1080, and in 1097 it belonged to the canonry of Santa María de Solsona; in 1778 it was established as an independent parish. The Romanesque church of Santa María has a single nave with a transept and an apse and a lantern tower resting on shells; of the two original apsidioles only one survives. The municipality, with a strong wine-growing tradition, grows mainly vines, cereals and olive trees, and is home to several cava-producing companies. The main feast, under the patronage of Saint Abdon and Saint Senen, is celebrated on the last Saturday of July.
