What to see and do in Avinyonet del Penedès

Avinyonet del Penedès
Village
Avinyonet del Penedès is a scattered municipality in the comarca of Alt Penedès, in the province of Barcelona, with 1,701 inhabitants, whose capital is the settlement of Avinyó Nou and which also groups together others such as l'Arboçar, Les Gunyoles or Sant Sebastià dels Gorgs. In the 10th century the territory belonged to the district of the castle of Olèrdola; the castle of Avinyó, under comital lordship, was entrusted to Mayor de Gurb, around which the church of Sant Pere was built, consecrated between 975 and 995. In 1156 Ramon Berenguer IV granted the mountain of Avinyó to Berenguer de Avinyó with the obligation to rebuild the castle, and in 1200 the castle, the town and the parish passed to the monastery of Poblet. A scattered farming municipality of Alt Penedès, it preserves numerous castles and farmhouses spread across its territory.
Castle of Avinyó
Monument
The castle of Avinyó, in the municipality of Avinyonet del Penedès, stood on a hill near the church of Sant Pere, where the Can Porràfols farmhouse now stands and where foundations and wall remains were found. It already existed in the 10th century as a dependency of the castle of Olèrdola; it was probably destroyed in the Almoravid raid of 1108, and in 1156 Ramon Berenguer IV granted the place to Berenguer d'Avinyó so that he might build houses and a castle there. It later passed to the lords of la Granada, to the monastery of Poblet and to the Pia Almoina of Barcelona, becoming royal property in the 17th century until the abolition of feudal lordships. No physical trace remains, not even of the hill on which it stood, levelled in recent times for agricultural use. It has been an Asset of National Cultural Interest since 1949.
Tower of l'Arboçar de Baix
Monument
A circular watchtower built around the year 1000 on the left bank of the torrent de l'Arboçar, in the south-western sector of the municipal area and within the sphere of influence of Olèrdola: about thirteen metres high, walls 1.70 metres thick, a domed top, and a door opened six metres above the ground with a monolithic lintel and a relieving arch of thirteen voussoirs. The "quadra" of l'Arboçar is recorded from the mid-11th century, and in 1119 the tower was the property of the count of Foix. It is declared an Asset of National Cultural Interest.
Monastery of Sant Sebastià dels Gorgs
Monument
The monastery of Sant Sebastià dels Gorgs stands in the population entity of the same name, at the northern end of the municipal area of Avinyonet del Penedès, next to the border with Subirats and near the BV-2429 road. It was originally a Benedictine priory from medieval times and today functions as the village's parish church. In the year 2000 it was declared an asset of national cultural interest. The settlement retains the rural character of the Alt Penedès, with the old monastic building as the main architectural landmark of the place.
Tower of les Gunyoles
Monument
A Roman funerary monument of circular plan, nine metres in diameter and about eleven metres high, with an opus caementicium core and ashlar facing, built between the mid-1st and early 2nd century and later reused as a watchtower; it stands within the Can Rialb estate, in les Gunyoles, a settlement of the municipality of Avinyonet del Penedès situated on a hillock near the N-340 road. The area already had an Iberian Cossetan presence, linked to the nearby settlement of the Turó de la Font de la Canya, and in Roman times it was crossed by the Via Mercadera, a secondary route linking Bàrcino with Ilerda. It is mentioned from 978 onward, and in the 12th century it passed into the hands of the Templars, and in 1205 to the Hospitallers. It is declared an asset of national cultural interest.
Hamlet of Santa Susanna
Monument
The Caseria de Santa Susanna, in the municipality of Avinyonet del Penedès, stands on a crag at 338 metres, surrounded by cultivated land. It is an agricultural complex of documented origin in 1152; in 1158 the place was ceded by Ramon and Sibil·la de Ribes to Berenguer d'Avinyó. The most notable feature is a square-plan stone tower with a gabled roof of Arab tile; the rest of the buildings retain features of interest, such as jambs, sills and stone lintels and segmental arches. It is popularly called "Castell" because of its elevated location and the tower itself, although there is no documentary evidence of a military origin. Today the settlement is practically abandoned. Asset of National Cultural Interest (BCIN 1873-MH).
Can Ràfols dels Caus
Monument
A farmhouse and winery in Avinyonet del Penedès with extensions documented in 1634, 1674, 1764, 1819, 1833 and 1864, and a large cava cellar from 1912; it belonged to Pere Ràfols i Trabal, mayor of Avinyonet, until Jacint Esteva Fontanet bought it in 1933. An active winery, of square plan with circular corner towers and a chapel with a barrel vault. An Asset of National Cultural Interest (BCIN 1874-MH).
