Subirats
Village
Subirats is a scattered municipality in the Alt Penedès, in the province of Barcelona, whose administrative capital, Sant Pau d'Ordal, is located 44 kilometres from Barcelona and at an altitude of 243 metres. The municipal area, with very varied relief, ranges from the foothills of the Garraf massif, with the Ordal mountain range and the Turó de Montcau, in the east, to the flattest part of the Penedès depression, used for cultivation, in the west. Its economy is based fundamentally on vine cultivation and cava production, spread across several settlements and historic wineries in the municipality. The coat of arms recalls the old castle of Subirats, from the 10th century, now in ruins, which stood on a hill and gives its name to the municipality.

Food and drink
Subirats is one of the municipalities with the most vineyard area in Catalonia and the territory of xarel·lo, a native white variety of firm acidity and good keeping. It serves as the base for the cavas and also gives highly prized estate whites.
