Olesa de Bonesvalls
Village
Olesa de Bonesvalls is a municipality of 2,135 inhabitants (2025) in Alt Penedès, at 265 metres above sea level in the heart of the Garraf massif, between the Bernat and Montau mountains. The settlement began to take shape in the 10th century next to the castle of Cervelló, which watched over the road to l'Ordal. In 1262 Guillem de Cervelló promoted a hospital for travellers, the “Hospitalis de Bonis Valibus” (“of the good valleys”), which cared for the poor, pilgrims and travellers between Barcelona, Vilafranca and Tarragona; its nave, tower and wall were completed by the mid-14th century. The hospital also served as a strategic position for the forces of the Generalitat in the war against John II, between 1462 and 1472. Occitan immigration in the 16th and 17th centuries increased the municipality's population.
Former Hospital of Cervelló
Monument
A wayfarers' hospital founded in 1262 by Guillem de Cervelló on the route between Barcelona and Vilafranca; in 1312 it served about 400 people a month, and after the barony was sold to James I in 1297 it passed under royal and episcopal jurisdiction, declining at the end of the 18th century when the road was rerouted. The building, today an agricultural holding in Olesa de Bonesvalls, retains a rectangular plan, a round-arched doorway and a rectangular tower. An Asset of National Cultural Interest since 1988 (BCIN 1127-MH).
