Tapioles
Village
Tapioles is a village of 128 inhabitants in the Zamora Tierra de Campos, given over to grain farming, with the Cerecinos de Campos stream, locally known as el reguero or la ría, on its way to the Valderaduey. Its municipal area is part of the natural reserve of the Lagunas de Villafáfila and, together with twelve other municipalities, forms part of the Mancomunidad del Raso de Villalpando. In prehistoric times the area was inhabited by the Vaccaei, grain farmers, and later by the Romans, who laid out their roads and worked the salt of the wetlands. The village is known for its Zamora sheep's cheese; of its old brick Romanesque church, demolished in the 1970s, only the base of the porch and a Baroque altarpiece remain, and its patroness is the Virgen de los Rayos.
