What to see and do in Villárdiga

Villárdiga
Village
Villárdiga is a hamlet in the Tierra de Alba region, in the province of Zamora, so close to San Martín de Valderaduey that a popular saying holds that «from afar they look like the moon and the sun». It has 60 inhabitants. Its name, documented since the 10th century as Villa Ardega — a village on the bank of a muddy stream —, points to the earliest human traces on its land, from Vaccaean times, found at the Teso de los Ladrillos. In the 12th and 13th centuries it was held by the Order of the Temple, coming to head a commandery, and later passed under the jurisdiction of Villalpando and into the hands of the Fernández de Velasco family. It is part of the Mancomunidad Intermunicipal del Raso de Villalpando. Its church of Santa María del Realengo holds a Renaissance altarpiece combining painted panels and sculptures.
