San Martín de Valderaduey
Village
San Martín de Valderaduey is a hamlet in the province of Zamora with 47 inhabitants, founded in the 10th century as a resettlement under Alfonso III, part of the Kingdom of León and already mentioned in documents of the Monastery of Sahagún. In the 14th century it passed to the Fernández de Velasco, dukes of Frías, and remained tied to Burgos until 1711; it was later incorporated into Zamora. In the early 19th century, during the Peninsular War, Spanish troops captured eight French soldiers from Villalpando here; in reprisal, General Jouniers burned the village and hanged fourteen men, who were buried in the church in 1824. That church, San Martín de Tours, has a Mudéjar tower and holds a greatly venerated Gothic Christ; within its municipal area lies the Área de las Estepas Cerealistas.
