Villalpando
Village
Villalpando is a town of 1,433 inhabitants, chief town of the Zamora Tierra de Campos and of its judicial district, 52 kilometres from Zamora, in the valley of the river Valderaduey. Documented as Villa Alpández in the 10th century under Ramiro II of León, it gained importance in the 11th century with several churches attached to the cathedral and to San Isidoro de León. Ferdinand II of León resettled it and granted it a charter in the second half of the 12th century as a defence against Castile, providing it with walls and an early castle later completed by the Order of the Temple after Alfonso IX ceded the town in 1211. Villalpando preserves two monumental gates in its walls, the castle of the Velasco family and the ruined church of Santa María la Antigua, and its encierros span more than five centuries.
