San Agustín del Pozo
Village
San Agustín del Pozo is a municipality in the province of Zamora whose municipal area is part of the national hunting reserve of the Lagunas de Villafáfila. Its origin dates back to the late 12th or early 13th century, when it was resettled by the kings of León; it belonged first to the Order of Santiago and later, from 1541, to the marquisate of Tábara, until the abolition of the seigneuries. Until 1916 it was called simply San Agustín. With 163 inhabitants, it celebrates its patronal festivities at the end of August. Its parish church of the Nativity of the Virgin, of medieval date, holds a 16th-century altarpiece made up of thirteen panels, the work of workshops from Toro. The village also has the only astronomical observatory in the province, built by a local shepherd in his own home.
