Quintanilla del Olmo
Village
Quintanilla del Olmo is one of the least populated municipalities of Zamora, with 38 residents, located in the comarca of Tierra de Campos. Its name means small hamlet, referring to the old quintanas, and takes its qualifier from the elm, also known as negrillo. It was resettled after the Muslim invasion by people from the north and south who arrived with Alfonso III, and later belonged to the Fernández de Velasco, dukes of Frías. After the creation of the provinces in 1833 it was first assigned to Valladolid and, from 1858, to Zamora. It celebrates San Babilés on 24 January; its church, dedicated to that saint, has a Gothic doorway with a segmental arch and housed, until the 20th century, a Hispano-Flemish altarpiece now in the cathedral of León.
