Vidayanes
Village
Vidayanes is a hamlet of 74 inhabitants in the province of Zamora, whose entire municipal area lies within the Penillanuras-Campos Sur SPA (Special Protection Area for birds). Its name, of personal origin, probably comes from the Latin personal name Vitalianus, itself derived from Vitalis, and it is documented from the 12th century in texts of the monasteries of Moreruela and Sahagún and of the Order of San Juan, under forms such as Vidaianes or Vidallanes. Its Romanesque church of San Juan Bautista, granted by Ferdinand II in 1174 to the Order of San Juan, displays the order's coat of arms above the door and holds Mudejar armour and wall paintings uncovered beneath the whitewash.
