Cañizo
Village
Cañizo is a village in the Zamora comarca of Tierra de Campos, beside the river Valderaduey, from whose riverside reeds it takes its name. The municipal area preserves Palaeolithic remains and a small Roman bronze figurine from the 4th century; the population, today 197, goes back to the 9th century, when it may have been resettled by Mozarabs, and in 1234 the monastery of Carracedo granted it its own charter. In the 14th century it passed into the hands of the Fernández de Velasco, dukes of Frías, until it was incorporated into the province of Zamora in 1858. Its rammed-earth houses are decorated with geometric sgraffito, something unusual in the area, and the 16th-century Renaissance church of San Pelayo holds an 18th-century silver cross. Beside the river stand the ruins of the Bradilla flour mill.
