Belver de los Montes
Village
Belver de los Montes is a village of 252 inhabitants situated at 688 metres above sea level, in the Zamora part of the Tierra de Campos; its built-up area sits on a slope on the flank of Mount Tarasa, next to the remains of its old castle and preceded by the vega of the río Sequillo. From the Sequillo valley come Acheulean handaxes and cleavers some 200,000 years old, and the megalithic burial of Las Peñicas, from the Neolithic, has also been found there. Already mentioned in the year 940 as Castrum Villaceth, it was refortified in the twelfth century by Ferdinand II and Alfonso IX of León, who gave it its present name and granted it a fuero in 1208. It formed part of the province of Toro until the reform of 1833. Its church of El Salvador has been a historic-artistic monument since 1978.
