Villafáfila
Village
Villafáfila is a village in Zamora province with 429 inhabitants, at the heart of the Zamora Tierra de Campos, whose municipal area is part of the Lagunas de Villafáfila nature reserve, also protected as a game reserve, an SCI (Site of Community Importance) and a Ramsar wetland (an internationally protected wetland). The quality of the salt from these lagoons led to its exploitation since prehistoric times. Its name comes from the union of villa with the Germanic personal name Fáfila or Fávila, documented since the year 936. The lagoons, declared a Game Reserve in 1986, are today a popular tourist destination for their waterfowl and steppe birds: they host Spain's second-largest wintering population of greylag goose and around 10% of the world's great bustards, as well as a colony of lesser kestrel in the neighbouring village of Otero de Sariegos.
