Villaveza del Agua
Village
Villaveza del Agua is a village of 162 inhabitants in the comarca of Benavente y Los Valles, in Zamora, situated at about 700 metres above sea level in the vega of the Esla river. Its name would combine the personal name of an old Mozarabic landowner, Abeza, with the generic «del Agua» («of the water»); it thus already appears cited in 987 as Villa de Abeza in a document of the Monastery of Sahagún. In 1167 King Ferdinand II of León granted a charter (fuero) to Benavente and its alfoz, on which the town depended. Its parish church of San Salvador, which collapsed in 1825 and was burned twice, today displays a neo-Gothic bell-gable of stone and brick and holds the altarpiece of the Cristo de los Afligidos. Alejandro Lerroux, who would go on to head the government of Spain during the Second Republic, spent part of his youth in this village.
