San Esteban del Molar
Village
San Esteban del Molar is a village of 117 inhabitants in the middle of the plain of the Zamora Tierra de Campos, with its entire municipal area within the Penillanuras-Campos Sur Special Protection Area for Birds, 54 kilometres from the provincial capital. Its founding forms part of the resettlement process carried out by the Leonese kings in the early Middle Ages, and it is already documented under the reign of Alfonso IX of León, in a purchase of land by the Order of Saint John dated 1190. Its parish church, with an emblematic tower, crowns the village from the top of the hill and holds the images of the Virgen de las Candelas, the Virgen del Carmen and the Cristo de la Misericordia, together with a notable main altarpiece. It celebrates the feast of the Cristo de la Misericordia on 17 May, that of the Virgen de las Candelas on 2 February, and the El Trillo cultural days in August.
