What to see and do in Villamayor de Campos

Villamayor de Campos
Village
Villamayor de Campos is a village in Zamora province with 330 inhabitants in the Tierra de Campos region, crossed in its southern part by the river Valderaduey. Human presence goes back to Roman times, from which tegulae, pottery and circular mills survive; after the castle of El Castro was destroyed in the Muslim invasion, Alfonso III resettled the area at the end of the 9th century, and around the present-day town several medieval settlements once existed that are now abandoned, such as Castro de Acebal or San Martín de los Rascones, documented since the 10th century. Before 1157 Alfonso VII granted it its own charter. Its church of la Asunción was rebuilt after a 16th-century fire by doña Magdalena de Ulloa, lady of the place through her marriage to Luis de Quijada.
