Vega de Villalobos
Village
Vega de Villalobos is a hamlet of 88 inhabitants a few kilometres from the Lagunas de Villafáfila, one of the most important wetlands in the province of Zamora and a refuge for the great bustard and many other birds. Its founding dates back to the resettlement carried out by the Leonese kings in the Early Middle Ages; it is documented from 1142, when the monastery of San Claudio de León bought land in the town. It belonged to the province of León until the provincial reorganisation of 1833, when it passed to Zamora within the Leonese Region. It retains wine cellars and dovecotes typical of the area, and its church, dedicated to San Román, stands out for its majestic tower. Local festivities are held on 30 July in honour of its Santicos, San Abdón and San Senén.
