Villalobos
Village
Villalobos is a village of 200 inhabitants in the Zamora Tierra de Campos, 61 kilometres from the provincial capital and crossed by the Autovía del Noroeste motorway. It sits at 715 metres in a sheltered valley with leafy poplar groves uncommon in the region; its entire municipal area, of 43.20 km², lies within the Penillanuras-Campos Sur SPA. Its origin goes back to the resettlement by the Leonese kings in the Early Middle Ages, and by 1159 the presence of King Ferdinand II of León is already documented there. In 1369 Henry II granted Álvaro Pérez Osorio the title of lord of the county of Villalobos, and by the mid-19th century the town had grown to 944 inhabitants, far more than today's 200. It preserves the convent of la Asunción, its main monument, now restored.
