Prado
Village
Prado is a hamlet in the Zamora comarca of Tierra de Campos, with 53 inhabitants and its entire municipal area within the Penillanuras-Campos Sur Special Protection Area for Birds. Former Vaccaean and later Roman territory, with remains from that period at Castro Lucio, it was founded in the 10th century by Alfonso III of León under the name Pratum, as a Leonese bastion against Castile, coming to be fortified with a wall and a castle. In the 14th century it passed into the hands of the Fernández de Velasco, dukes of Frías, and belonged to the so-called Province of the Lands of the Constable until 1711; after several administrative changes it was definitively integrated into the province of Zamora in 1858. It forms part, together with twelve other municipalities of the Zamora Tierra de Campos, of the Mancomunidad del Raso de Villalpando, devoted to exploiting the communal woodland of the same name. Its church of Santa Marina holds a 1738 Baroque altarpiece of the Leonese school, and on 1 May its procession meets halfway with that of Quintanilla del Olmo.
