Villarrín de Campos
Village
Villarrín de Campos is a village of 387 inhabitants in the Tierra de Campos region, in the province of Zamora, situated within the Lagunas de Villafáfila nature reserve, where the river Salado rises from the outflow of the lagoons of las Salinas, San Pedro and Villardón. Beside the San Pedro lagoon there is a recreational area with a bird observatory. In the Middle Ages, the wealth of its salt flats attracted settlers and ecclesiastical interest: in 1077 Count Pedro Ordóñez donated his holdings in Villarrín to the bishop of León, and the monastery of Moreruela came to be a major landowner for the exploitation of salt. Its Renaissance church holds the Cristo de los Afligidos, documented as early as 1414, and twelve panels of Flemish influence from the 16th century.
