Granja de Moreruela
Village
Granja de Moreruela is a village in Tierra de Campos, in the province of Zamora, with 228 inhabitants, whose main attraction is the ruins of the Cistercian monastery of Santa María de Moreruela, a 12th-century monastery declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). The present-day town began as a grange of the monastery: in 1143 it was the former town of Santa Eugenia, granted by Alfonso VII of León to the founding monks, and over time it took the name Granja de Santa Eugenia and later Granja de Opera. In 1296 King Ferdinand IV authorised the monastery to found three pueblas or boroughs, at Zamora, Benavente and Moreruela de Suso. Its territory also contains the Abrigo de El Portalón rock shelter, with schematic cave paintings beside the river Esla. On 25 April it holds the pilgrimage of la Pedrera.
