Pajares de la Lampreana
Village
Pajares de la Lampreana is a village of 282 inhabitants in the comarca of la Lampreana, in the centre of the province of Zamora, which once had four hermitages and today preserves only the one dedicated to the Virgen del Templo, its patroness and former parish church; its altarpiece of nineteen panels was painted by the Zamora-born Blas de Oña in the first third of the 16th century. The church of San Pedro also stands out among its buildings. The village appears documented as Paliares in 1185 and as Payares in 1291. The comarca of la Lampreana, already mentioned in documents from the 9th and 10th centuries, owes its name, according to the most widely accepted theory, to the salt lagoons where the monks of Sahagún monastery raised lampreys; today Pajares forms part, together with Manganeses and Villalba, of the Mancomunidad de Tierra de Campos-Pan-Lampreana.
