What to see and do in Santovenia

Santovenia
Village
Santovenia is a village of 219 inhabitants in the province of Zamora, in Castile and León, situated right on the Vía de la Plata and looking down from a hillside over the Esla valley. Its parish church is dedicated to Nuestra Señora del Tobar, patroness of the municipality, and not to Santa Eugenia as in other Castilian-Leonese villages of the same name, although its territory preserves the site of Santa Eugenia, which had a hermitage until around 1700. The oldest document mentioning the locality is the 1167 charter (fuero) of Benavente. It also preserves a three-spout fountain that was used to water the area's abundant mule herds, especially in the 1940s and 1950s.
